In a panel discussion, financial experts convened to dissect the evolving landscape of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and the growing influence of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors on Middle Eastern capital markets. Moderated by Hala Bou Alwan

Lawyer, Financial Crimes Expert & Media Personality, the session delved into the strategic advantages of IPOs, their role in driving growth, and the imperative integration of ESG principles.

Alan Williamson, CEO of Taaleem shed light on the multifaceted benefits of IPOs beyond their primary function of capital acquisition. Drawing from Ta3leem’s recent IPO experience, Alan emphasized how going public sharpened the company’s strategic focus, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and democratized wealth creation by involving employees and parents in the company’s growth narrative.

Bassel Khatoun, Senior Managing Director, Director of Research Director of Portfolio Management, Frontier, and MENA Franklin Templeton Investments, underscored IPOs’ catalytic role in pushing forward economic growth. 

Khatoun cited examples from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where IPOs have not only facilitated capital inflow but also boosted brand visibility and improved corporate governance standards. 

The panelists highlighted that IPOs serve as essential mechanisms for founders to secure reliable exit paths and reinvest capital into new ventures, thereby fueling innovation and economic expansion.

With regards to ESG integration, Nour Safa, Director of MENA Debt Capital Markets of HSBC, emphasized its transformative potential, positioning it not merely as a regulatory obligation but as a driver of long-term value creation. 

Williamson echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of proactive ESG initiatives in aligning with evolving investor preferences and fostering sustainable business practices.

Looking ahead, the panelists outlined key strategies for sustaining growth in Middle East capital markets. They emphasized the need for transparent governance, regulatory efficiency, and strategic alignment with national development agendas. 

Bou Alwan highlighted the GCC’s appeal as a haven for investors, supported by governmental efforts to ensure stability and resilience in the face of global uncertainties.
