Sr Alessandra Smerilli, F.M.A., studied theology and became Daughter of Mary Help of Christians in 1997. She graduated in Economics, earned a PhD in Political Economy and a PhD in Economics. Since 2016, she has been researching the economic theories of cooperation and ideal-driven organizations. She is full professor of Political Economy and has taught Cooperative economy, Economics, ethics, and Finance, and International Economics at Catholic and Pontifical Universities. Since April 2020, she has been collaborating with the Dicastery for Promoting Integral
Human Development. On 26 August 2021, the Holy Father appointed her Interim Secretary
of the Dicastery and Delegate for the Vatican Covid-19 Commission.
On 23 April 2022, the Pope appointed her Secretary of the Dicastery.
